why-do-catholics-light-candles
  • Individuals from many denominations incorporate candles in their places of worship. However, using candles in connection with worship and prayer is particularly prominent in the Catholic Church.

In parishes, candles grace the altar and often help to illuminate stained glass works of art. The candles on the altar represent the light and presence of God. There is always at least one candle burning on the altar. However, many cathedrals utilize a seven-stick candelabra—six candles are always lit—the seventh and tallest candle remains unlit, representing the Lord’s promise to return to earth to establish His millennial kingdom (Revelation 20). The tradition of placing candles on the altar in Catholic churches dates back approximately 1000 years.

For centuries, Catholic leaders have used candles to help herald joyous events. For example, candles are a part of baptism and confirmation services. In these services, the candlelight represents Jesus Christ, the light that came into a darkened world (John 1:3-9, 8:12). Candles also play a prominent role in celebrating the coming of Christmas (Advent) and the approach of Easter (Lent).

Why are there often many small candles in Catholic Churches?

Stands, racks, or tables of small candles (often placed near statues or ornate pictures) can be found in most Catholic Churches today. These votive candles are lit in connection with a special prayer need or request. Their placement in colored glass (and sometimes placed near stained glass) have three primary purposes:

    1. They add beauty to the sanctuary and worship experience.
    2. They remind believers there have been dark periods in church history when worshippers were required to gather in candlelight, at night, and in secret.
    3. They represent the prayers of God’s people. Seeing these candles encourages followers of Christ to support their brothers and sisters in the faith via intercessory prayer.

Can anyone light a candle in a Catholic Church?

In general, the answer is yes. The use of votive or prayer candles is very popular among those without a connection to a Catholic parish.

The lighting of a candle in church affirms one’s faith in Christ and belief in the value of prayer. Catholic leaders appreciate these qualities and happily assist those with questions or in need. Please get in touch with the diocese or local church office for more information about lighting a candle in a local parish.

What are the six meanings of prayer candles in Greek Orthodox Churches?

Prayer candles are the most common of the more than a dozen different candles utilized in Greek Orthodox Churches. Though prayer candles vary in size and color, according to the teachings of 14th-century Saint Symeon of Thessalonica, all symbolize the following:

    1. Jesus Christ, the light of the world.
    2. The purity of our soul.
    3. The “plasticity of our soul.’ That is, humans have free will and can choose to pursue good or evil.
    4. The glory of God (light, fire, and energy).
    5. Divine grace (several Old Testament stories speak of God’s cleansing, an act of grace, by fire).
    6. Love and peace (because the candle’s fragrance, light, beauty, and warmth facilitate unity and fellowship).
