Catholic Resources about the ritual of lighting candles
"We give you thanks O God, For this happy moment And we ask that as we are one, In this circle of light We may always be one with you In the circle of your loving presence.Amen."
The tradition of lighting candles in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was inspired by a miracle that happened many centuries ago and has blessed so many lives since.
The New Testament speaks of Christ’s followers creating light, not only to serve as offering to God, but to be in communion with him. The Old Testament speaks of the faithful preparing an altar in the temple of the Lord.
In most every part of Catholic celebrations and rituals, lighting of candles play a very significant role. Candles are lighted during the celebration of the Mass, on liturgical and funeral processions and evening prayer ceremonies.
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a witness and testimony to the Father’s unconditional love for us. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is a manifestation of how precious we are in God’s eyes.
