  • Lighting candles in places of worship is a timeless tradition--present in the Tabernacle of Moses, the Temple of Solomon, and the miracle of the oil and light in the days of the Maccabees. The incorporation of light and candles in times of prayer and places of worship has carried on through the centuries to the present day.

    The symbolism of light

In the third verse in the Bible, we read that God said, "Let there be light." From the beginning, humans have linked light and prayer to God. In today's sophisticated, high-tech world, we can find peace and comfort by pausing, dimming the lights, praying, and reflecting on the God of heaven who beckons us to "cast our cares upon Him, knowing that He cares for us" (1 Peter 5:7).

In Catholic and Orthodox churches, there is usually one candle burning—representing the abiding presence of God. At times, a seven-stick candle holder graces the altar, with six candles lit and the center, tallest candle remaining unlit in anticipation of the promised return of Christ.

Lighting candles is an expression of worship

There are many reasons individuals light candles in a Catholic or Orthodox Church. They include:

    •       A sign of one's commitment to live a life of purity.
    •       A sign of one's faith in Christ, who is the Light.
    •       A sign of one's commitment to be a witness for the Lord and share the light of Christ.
    •       A sign of one's desire to place their prayers before the Lord of Light.

When are candles lit in church?

It is best to discuss candle-lighting schedules and options with local church leaders. However, in general, candles are lit before services and as a part of special masses such as a prayer or baptism service, or funeral procession.

Many Catholic Churches have Rack stands which hold many small candles known as votives or vigil lights. These candles represent the prayers of parishioners—the beauty of these lights in colored holders invites others to share in praying for the concerns of fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

Can someone light a candle on my behalf?

Yes. Coordinators of this website offer a single and seven-day candle lighting service. During the candle lighting ceremony, which takes place in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, we will light your candle, hold your printed prayer request near the Stone of Anointing (the slab upon which the body of Jesus was laid after the crucifixion), read your request(s), and intercede for you in prayer. Our staff will photograph the ceremony, blow out your candle after a time of prayer, and email photos to you.

Those who order the Gift of Light candle will have their candle shipped from Jerusalem in a beautifully crafted olive wood box made in Israel. Please click HERE or HERE for additional information on these services.

Several notable Churches in the United States will light a candle on your behalf. The Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington, Virginia, for example, will light a votive candle on your behalf and pray for your concerns. The service is free, but donations are encouraged. Contact your local parish for additional information on this option.
